I would rather take someone out to lunch or give them gift certificates if I couldn't give them a bonus. FYI: I was not a secretary, I was a salaried supervisor, but I felt sorry for women who were rewarded for their hard work with flowers instead of bonuses and promotions (like men get). My husband was perfect for me, and I loved him dearly but it began to be too exhausting and lethal to my core beliefs and person. Broke, both of sick, beaten down, and still fighting we began to look for jobs in other cities.
