The next path is a career. But next is the careerpath and I know he is feeling concerned about it.
As a Gen-Y who stopped going to college I found that real life experiences, networks and self education were more important and vital than a college education for my career track. Career counselors focus on teaching students/clients skills such prepare a competitive resume, interview well and employ job search strategies.

Getting some criticism tends to give up or lose some of self-confidence on choosing your career but accepting those bad criticism if you analyze it gives you a better insight on your careerpath in life. Be more open to any possibility for a change on your career where you can excel your capability and capacity.
Think of your careerpath as a question path. When I taught 6th grade we spent an entire unit at the beginning of the year learning questioning (the Socratic method and other questioning strategies). For example, I know I want to write about the farm, but I’m not sure how to do it. It's a perfect match. ?

So my new strategy is to focus on one "side project" at a time apart from my full time job as Program Manager at Microsoft. Personally, I am looking at professional programs in economics because I have found this to be essential for my careerpath. I review/shift my focus on a monthly/quarterly basis.
As the CEO of a start-up she could, for example, make a quick decision to change the sales strategy; however as an executive for an environmental non-profit she always spent lots of time drafting climate change policy and reviewing it with a diverse array of stakeholders.
