Those things can be reinforced in school but the bulk of it is developed at home in my opinion. I think it's important to not make people feel bad or stupid when they ask questions – intimidation doesn't motivate learning. The trick is to develop a toolkit of questions large enough to accommodate all listening habits.

The further we get from the intact multi-generational family model, the further our kids suffer, as our public school graduates now rank dead last in the developed world in terms of knowledge, and, at the same time, are told that, by the age of 21, they are to be out of the home and on their own. What is wrong with that picture.

And each of your break-ups has been motivated by fear of this growth and change, rather than by nastiness or gossip. We play hide and seek with our own motives. Awareness of every single motive, of all the biological/physiological mechanisms and sensory signals bombarding us would paralyze our capacity to act decisively.
