It plays a role as a “reward center” and in many body functions, including pleasurable reward and motivation, mood, movement, and attention. It also gives us the motivation to do something when we are feeling pleasure. Emotions play an equally important role in motivation and decision-making. It gives us a sense of pleasure.
It is also linked to ‘intrinsic motivation in goal accomplishment’ [ix] , as we seek to sustain our ‘feel good habits. Serotonin acts as a natural anti-depressant, enhancing ‘our mood, our willpower, and motivation’. [x] Dopamine triggers optimistic emotions and prosocial behaviors.
Being stuck can show up as procrastination, avoidance or distraction, feeling overwhelmed, feeling a general lack of motivation or confusion, tension, or frustration in relationships (Goleman 2005). With that insight, we can apply Self-management and learn how to navigate our emotions more skillfully (SIY Global 2023).
Strengths development entails motivating employees to cultivate and refine their strengths (Meyers & van Woerkom, 2017). Influence, on the other hand, refers to the ability of a leader to inspire and motivate others to achieve common goals. 2003, 2005; Onyemah, 2009; Trépanier, 2010; Pousa, 2012; Pousa and Mathieu, 2014).
For instance, coaching interventions may differ for a front-line manager dealing with customer interactions compared to a senior executive focused on strategic decision-making. Management needs to recognize that the workplace needs to be optimized for both Es and Is, and people need to have the courage to optimize their own lives.
Being able to do the former is the difference between being a leader and a manager. I think it's important to not make people feel bad or stupid when they ask questions – intimidation doesn't motivate learning. It was forming as they asked it or became more clear while they were forming it (out loud).
People think their work situation is so complicated and I have to understand all the motivators. I've used it to help me manage my subconscious mind's attitudes and beliefs, and I've made a lot of progress with it. He tells me that I have a problem and I need to get over it.
