It is elitist and a rip off and the Internet has democratized access to information and communication skills to the point that paying $30K a year to get them is insane. Most people get jobs from their network, not from a career center. And social media is the fastest, most effective way for you to build a network.
You can also think of job-hunting as doing the difficult work of connecting with people and looking for an opening in your network, and that’s certainly not something you can do all day. I think the proof of this is that gen Y prefers communicating via social media rather than emai l; news travels faster, via larger groups of people. Like you, I suck at the friendship thing, and that's mostly because I suck at talking, especially on the phone–which is how most non internet people seem to communicate. He may not be able to do this himself very easily so a good support network is very important. Days spent in business meetings and business networking leave me wiped out because I invest so much energy trying to be self-aware and reading cues from the people I'm with. Who knew that farmers have a telepathic line of communication. I think it's just part of settling in and learning to communicate our needs, even though it was rough to go through at the time. Just working out living together and how to train our dog brings up communication issues that seem petty but they keep coming up.
For Generation Z, email is for diatribes and texting is for communication. Good managers will do their own recruiting by having their own great network. And managers already recruit through networks – at least in areas of short supply, or PAs who they take from job to job with them. There are few laptops in our future.
