I first came upon Positive Psychology in a University psychology class in 2010. They had developed such a level of hopelessness that it became their mindset and their behavior was passive. As the field of Positive Psychology developed, Dr. Seligman studied the aspects of Happiness following the path of life satisfaction.
Coaching supports the three core stages of leadership development: readiness, willingness, and ability to lead. The coach is encouraged to be ‘be alert to stories, narrative, and metaphor as a gateway to fruitful connection and more effective and deeper interpretation (Robinson 2010) 6. SAI- Australian Coaching Standards).
Developing strong relationships is central to adaptation and is enabled by our capacity for love, compassion, kindness, empathy, self-sacrifice, teamwork, and cooperation.” [x] xiii] We look for accomplishment, even if it does not lead to any of the other well-being factors. In other words, the activity is its own reward. [ix]
I will then go on to show ways in which coaching in schools could help develop and sustain this framework to embed a positive culture, focused on the well-being of the school staff. Carol Dweck, a professor at Stanford University who is known for her work on Mindset defines a person having a Growth mindset as an individual who believes their talent can be developed through hard work, good strategies, and input from others. Perfectionistmeasure their self-worth by productivity and accomplishment.
What gets them fired can be their inability to develop strong emotional intelligence skills that bring people together and drive initiatives forward. I have developed a coaching 6-step process called SEEDING. To have an accomplished life, everyone needs to feel a sense of connection, purpose, contribution, and self-realization. Developing a growth mindset will help to see our abilities as something that can be developed through hard work and dedication, focusing on the progress made, and acknowledging the effort over the outcome. Winning is usually accomplished by placing the ball where your opponent isn't located: either you put the ball there yourself or you pass your team-mate so they can put the ball there. There was so little opportunity for true growth or development but I kept telling myself that I should be happier being at a non-profit and not "working for the man." I will certainly make sure that my time and skills are valued, both in my pay and in my career development. How much greater good would that have accomplished?
Maybe I'm wrong but this thing about families and businesses and the two co-existing alongside each other is a whole other world for you to delve into and develop out of. Part of me is looking to the day we actually do develop the ability to be more telepathic so that even IM and Twitter become obsolete…(smile…I am mostly kidding…says the person who adores thinking in haiku or tanka if I am feeling long winded.) That's all. I imagine i'm probly not alone.
