The same variety of approach exists for careercoaching as well. I, for one, have given bad career advice (like, for example, to my brother's college roommate ,) and most of the time that I've given bad career advice it's been because I have a perspective that just doesn't shift in that instance.
As a Gen-Y who stopped going to college I found that real life experiences, networks and self education were more important and vital than a college education for my career track. As a director of a liberal arts career center, I would take issue with the broad brush with which you paint all career centers. It's sad.
