Although careers work has been pretty beleaguered for the last decade, there was a sense that the new government might offer better things. Let’s hope that the government can deliver on their promise. I felt that there was a very positive atmosphere. Some of us were daring to hope for the better.
But it is worth calling attention to the work of the CareerDevelopment Policy Group. This group is a coalition of careers sector organisations and stakeholders who campaign to influence policy. The main proposal that the group has made is called the Career Guidance Guarantee.
I have just written a briefing paper for the CareerDevelopment Institute looking at Lord Blunkett’s report for the Labour Party, Learning and skills for economic recovery, social cohesion and a more equal Britain. In the paper I describe the vision that Blunkett’s paper sets out for the careerdevelopment system.
Vision and leadership national visions for guidance are clearly articulated in policy, supported by multiple government departments, and aligned to implementation plans. These six features of good practice can be summarised as follows. Read the report
I chose the topic of ‘Careering from cradle to grave’ and put together a presentation which argues, firstly that career needs to be understood broadly as our path throughout life, secondly that we need to give people help throughout their lives as they develop their career.
As they are the party most likely to form the new government it is important to think about what it means for the careers sector. Firstly the commitment to arbitrary fiscal rules may prove to be a serious limiter on the capacity of the government to act.
She hasn’t said a lot about career guidance, but I did find an intervention into a debate in 2011 while the then Conservative government were slashing and burning the existing careers system. On the other hand Truss seemed to really warm up to the Govean line of bashing careers advisers, so watch out.
The select committee Select committee’s are designed to scrutinise government policy. They don’t really have a lot of power, but they do get to look deeply at different topics and then call government ministers and others in to answer questions. There is a lot of ink spilt on the differences between employability work and career guidance, but there is certainly a strong case to make that they are at least very similar activities if not just versions of the same thing. The sector responded, but the government ploughed on with making its austerity-fuelled cuts.
The pursuit of collective action and an engagement in democracy is central to my beliefs about what effective careerdevelopment is and what should be included in careers education, so view this post as an attempt for me to walk the walk.
