Whenever I take over a channel or team, one of the first questions I ask is “what is the vision?” Most of the time, this is tough to answer. There is usually strong alignment and attachment to the greater organization’s vision and values, which is vital. However, what I find frequently missing is a sense [.] The post How To Build a Strong Team Vision appeared first on Let's Grow Leaders.
I am shocked to hear that 60% of people don’t know what’s holding them back from reaching their goals. So I decide that I will address the topic: The way you figure out what you should be doing next is that you try stuff. You make bad choices, you try again. This is really standard advice for recent grads. But then, somewhere around age thirty, people start thinking they are above this advice.
It’s a common complaint: I’ve got too much work and not enough time to do it all. Considering the alternative (no work at all!), you’re in a decent position. That doesn’t make it any easier to handle though. So let’s talk about ways to manage this overwhelming workload without losing your cool. Note: All of these topics are explored in much greater depth in my Get Productive Now!
Does professionalism stimulate or stifle creativity? When research is essential for your creative work, how do you avoid it becoming an excuse for procrastination? It was one of the original six talks posted on TED.com and it has, over the years, become our most-watched video with 13.5 million views. Sir Ken Robinson’s talk from TED2006, “ Ken Robinson says schools kill creativity ,” is truly a juggernaut. But the real genius is Matt. He has so much creative intelligence, that we’re going to do some serious banking.
One of my favorite leadership classics is Jesus CEO by Laurie Beth Jones. It’s an intriguing read on servant leadership. And so, as a Christmas Eve offering, I share some thoughts on Jesus as leader. Laurie Beth reminds us that in addition to everything else, Jesus inspired sustained results through very human leadership techniques. 1. The first time it happened, I was devastated. Why was that necessary? What was I doing wrong?

If you’ve taken a college course on leadership, you likely went through the evolution of thinking on leadership… including “trait theory.” I won’t begin to debate all that as I did back in college, or as I had my freshman debate in my classes. With the increased interest in reskilling and upskilling existing workforces, companies are looking for more training and development content and realizing that higher education has a lot to offer. Similarly, companies are finding value in providing training to students and preskilling their future workforce. The challenge is that the technology and platforms used to serve these two audiences have never had to work well together—until now.

My favorite Christmas stories are the ones where a humble hero offers the best gifts he can muster. It never looks like much on the outside. 1. They use lists. High achievers organize their thinking with lists , they organize their time with lists , and when they want to spur their creativity, the best tool they have is to force themselves out of the comfort of their list. 2. They use pharmaceuticals. Adderall is de rigeur for the high-powered jobs in high-powered cities to the point that there is a shortage of available Adderall, (and a site to monitor the shortage ).

The last company I founded, Brazen Careerist , was full of Gen Y-ers. In fact, for a while, I was the only person in the company older than 25. I spent a lot of time learning to adapt. Fast. And the whole time I thought to myself: I can’t wait until these kids need to adapt to the next generation. I want them to know what it feels like. At this point, the oldest in Generation Z are just turning 13, and we have enough information about the two demographics to predict what will happen.
Branding has finally reached the snobs who think they are above it. Every Gen Y-er knows about personal branding , and every Silicon Valley social media maven has one eye on their Klout score. But this year the New York Times declared that branding is a must-do for psychologists. You can’t make money if you don’t have a brand. I was thrilled to read this because I have thought for many years that my therapists could benefit from having me help them run their careers.
Powerful people do not have good listening skills. They hate to listen. They succeed by getting good at faking it. Here’s how I know. There are sixteen Myers Briggs personality types. Only 4% of people are ENTJ s, but almost all Fortune 500 CEOs are ENTJs. Each type has an Achilles’ heel. The ESFP can’t stand being alone. The INTP can’t get their head out of the clouds.
I’ve heard from a lot of people lately who are all suffering with the same problem: An overly critical boss. There’s nothing worse than working for someone who only sees the negative. When you do great work, it’s ignored. But when you make a mistake or somehow fall short of expectations (even completely unreasonable ones), you’re criticized. It feels so unfair.
