When my step-mom was in and out of the hospital getting chemotherapy, I learned a lot about how to deal with doctors. He has great examples of terrible ways to ask for time and also good ways, like, “grab a quick coffee” which is not so clearly defined, but clearly short in duration. Get your timing right.

When he left the hospital he was paralyzed.

When I got home from the hospital, the farmer was trying to stabilize things at home. Then she got splashed with water and darted and I fell off of her. I got a sprained neck and a concussion. And I got lots of narcotics to deal with the pain. The farmer always responds to my instability with more stability.

I know that was a throwaway aside for you in this post, but every time someone says they wish they had anorexia, I think of my cousin Kerry a few years ago — down to 80 lbs, too small for size zero clothes, and in the hospital — and how helpless I felt about being able to convince her know she was precious and important.

If hospitals in NYC did this, there would be a run on grilled cheese ingredients all over the city. Not only was it not OTT, it was mature, kind & mentor-y. I drove myself to the emergency room, and they said I was actually at risk of going into shock behind the wheel. So it was bad enough that they gave me vicodin.

I loved studying communication, but now I work as an executive assistant in a psychiatric hospital.
